Make Kern File

This script generates a kern file (.afm) from the manual kerning in an Indesign document. You can import this to Fontlab.

Installation
  1. On Mac OS X: Put the script in "/Users/your Username/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 5.0/Scripts/Scripts Panel/make kern file.js" (or the folder of your InDesign version).
  2. Open the file in a text editor and fill in the two paths at the top of the file.

Usage
  1. Make an Indesign document with one text tread only. It may span over several pages.
  2. Open the panel "Window > Automating > Scripts" and double click on "make kern file.js".
  3. Save the result.
  4. Import the data to FontLab in the Metrics Window.

The script is mainly used and tested with InDesign CS3 (Mac). It should work on CS2 and CS4, too. If you have any problems, please let me know.

The script tries to find glyph names for small caps by checking if small caps is applied to the text. If so it appends ".sc" to the glyph name (the script can only get the original character, therefore you have to guess the visible glyph). If you use another name extension you have to change it in the script.
